"The world is so empty if one thinks only of mountains, rivers and cities; but to know someone who thinks and feels with us, and who, though distant, is close to us in spirit, this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden." ~ Goethe

About Amber

I’m Amber M. Prather, MA, LPC, a Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice in Oklahoma City.

I have long been drawn to the depth and complexity of emotional life: how we adapt, how we protect ourselves, how pain can be carried in silence, and how healing becomes possible when we are deeply understood. My early interest in psychology began through my own background as a competitive figure skater and a desire to understand performance anxiety, but over time it grew into something deeper: a profound respect for the ways emotion, relationship, body, and story shape who we are.

My work is informed by AEDP, relational, psychodynamic, attachment-based, and somatically informed approaches. I am especially interested in helping people move beyond survival and into a more grounded, connected, and authentic relationship with themselves.

I bring a warm, engaged, and thoughtful presence to the therapy room. My style is compassionate, honest, and deeply attuned. I value depth over performance, authenticity over pretense, and meaningful change over quick solutions. I see therapy as a place where people can come into closer relationship with themselves, with their emotional truth, and with the parts of their experience that may have long gone unseen or carried alone.

It is an honor to do this work. I care deeply about creating a space where you can feel safe enough to be real, supported enough to soften, and free enough to become more fully yourself.

A little more about me

I see the therapeutic relationship as a unique professional relationship that affords us the space to know ourselves more fully by exploring our innermost thoughts and feelings, and to be curious about how our minds work in an effort to bear or resolve emotional pain and distress. I aim to help promote personal growth through the development of awareness, reflection, compassion and emotional regulation. Often the problematic symptoms we experience are a result of our mind’s creative attempt to keep painful emotions out of our awareness in order to protect ourselves. Living with parts of our emotional experience quarantined from our awareness may leave us feeling numb, detached or like we are going through the motions and devoid of a sense of vitality, aliveness and connection in life. Therapy aims to help us experience the full range of emotions and to integrate all parts of our experience into our story to help us feel connected to both ourselves and the world around us. It is a process that requires safety, respect, collaboration and commitment. It is an investment in the quality of our lives.

I am Past President of the Oklahoma Society for Psychoanalytic Studies (OSPS) and have actively served on the Board for over 10 years. I have completed 3 courses of study through OSPS in the Foundations of Psychoanalytic Thought and have completed a 16 hour training certificate in Applied Polyvagal Theory for Yoga Therapeutics. I maintain or exceed yearly continuing education requirements as set forth by the Oklahoma Board of Behavioral Health Licensure. I am also an approved LPC Supervisor and provide clinical supervision to candidates working toward licensure as well as consultation to other licensed professionals.

You probably arrived here because you are seeking help, understanding, change or support. I invite you to explore and see if you think I may be of help to you. I understand that reaching out itself is a brave and courageous action. I am here to help.
